The First Half Works, Then It Falls Apart
A lot of reviewers agree on this one. The first ninety minutes feel like Spielberg doing what he does best, with that old school mystery and sense of wonder that makes you want to see where it goes.
- The problem is what happens after that. Once the mystery starts unraveling, the movie struggles to stick the landing and a lot of that early goodwill starts slipping away.
The Script Is Getting a Lot of the Blame
This isn’t really being framed as a Spielberg problem. The screenplay comes from David Koepp, a writer with an inconsistent track record, and that inconsistency is where a lot of the issues seem to live.
- Even one of the more positive reviews admitted the characters don’t always feel fully formed, with some side characters actually coming across as more interesting than the leads. When your main characters feel thinner than your supporting cast, that’s a real structural issue.
More than one critic has stressed this was a crushing disappointment, not because the film is bad, but because it could have been so much more.
