#1 Most Dangerous Fiber: Why Your Supplements Might Be Trash

We have spent decades learning about the dangers of refined sugar and processed carbs, but a new silent killer is hiding in your health food aisle. According to Dr. Eric Berg, the “fiber craze” of 2026 is leading millions of people to consume refined fibers that are essentially junk food for your gut microbes. While whole food fiber is a life saving nutrient, the isolated versions found in bars and powders may be doing more harm than good.

The Polyphenol Guidance System

In nature, fiber never exists in isolation. When you eat an onion, a bean, or a berry, the fiber is physically and tightly bound to compounds called polyphenols. These two elements are woven together in the plant cell wall and are meant to travel through your digestive system as a single package.

  • Dr. Berg explains that polyphenols act like air traffic controllers for your colon (02:41). They are the guidance system that decides which bacteria get to thrive and which ones get shut down. Without these polyphenols, fiber is just raw fuel without a pilot.
  • Research shows that when these two work together, they selectively promote beneficial species and suppress harmful bacteria, creating a powerful anti inflammatory effect that neither can achieve alone (04:16)

The Dangers of Refined Fiber

Refined fibers like chicory root extract, soluble corn fiber, and tapioca fiber are created using the same industrial heat and chemical processes as white sugar. By stripping away the polyphenols, the food industry creates a product that overwhelms your system.

  • When you consume these isolated fibers, three dangerous things happen in your body. First, the wrong bacteria take over because the guidance system is missing.
  • Second, the fiber ferments far too quickly in the wrong place. Instead of a slow breakdown in the large colon, refined fiber often ferments in the small intestine, leading to a condition known as SIBO (07:04).
  • Third, because the lower colon is starved of its proper fuel, it begins to eat its own protective mucous layer. This process leads directly to leaky gut, autoimmune issues, and chronic systemic inflammation (07:35).
