Google Deindexing The Hidden Issue That Can Hurt Your Website

SEO expert Glenn Gabe recently shared a case study where a site suffered total Google de-indexing overnight. While it looked like a penalty for AI content, the real cause was a hidden security hole.

Watch the full breakdown in the video below:

The Nightmare Scenario: Total Disappearance

A client in a high stakes niche emailed Glenn Gabe with an emergency. Their site was completely gone from Google search results. A search for their specific URL showed zero results. At first, the team suspected a penalty for using AI content. However, the truth was much more technical.

The Culprit: The Ghost Subdomain

Most people choose one version of their site to be the main version. This client used the version without the “www” prefix. They assumed the “www” version was safely redirected and forgotten.

  • The Security Hole: The “www” entry in their DNS records was still pointed to an old app they had stopped using.
  • The Hijack: A hacker grabbed that old app name. They pointed that specific subdomain to a gambling site.
  • The Result: Because the homepage was now linked to spam, Google flagged the entire domain for major spam problems.

How to Diagnose a Hidden Hack

The client did not see the problem because they only monitored their main URL in Google Search Console. To find the truth, Glenn had to look at the Domain Property.

Three Steps to Protect Your Site

You can avoid this stress by following a few simple technical rules.

  • Monitor Every Version: Set up every version of your site in Google Search Console. This includes the versions with and without “www” as well as the full Domain Property.
  • Audit Your DNS Records: Check your DNS settings for old apps or services you no longer use. If you do not need a record, delete it.
  • Do Not Panic on AI: Many sudden drops in traffic are actually technical or security issues. Always check your security report in Search Console first.
