Is Botox Making Us Numb and Lifeless? Ashley Viola Says YES!!!

The Botox epidemic is making us numb and lifeless in ways that go way deeper than frozen foreheads, and Ashley Viola’s latest video makes a case that’s genuinely hard to argue with once you hear the science behind it.

Botox Doesn’t Just Freeze Your Face, It Dulls Your Emotions Too

  • This is the part most people in the Botox conversation aren’t talking about. Research from USC and Duke universities published in early 2026 confirmed what smaller studies have been suggesting for years: Botox injections impair your ability to understand the emotions of other people.
  • The science behind it is called embodied cognition, the idea that we unconsciously mirror the facial expressions of people we’re talking to, and that mirroring is actually how we feel empathy.
  • Research by Eric Finzi found that when you numb your expression you numb the emotion attached to it too, meaning Botox to your happiness lines doesn’t just smooth the skin, it literally reduces your capacity to feel happiness.

The Frozen Face Epidemic Is Changing What We Think Normal Looks Like

  • Ashley’s broader point is a cultural one and it lands hard. Smooth foreheads, puffy lips, dead eyes, and expressionless faces have become so normalised on social media, in Hollywood, and in everyday life that a naturally expressive, mobile face is starting to look unusual by comparison.
  • The pressure to start preventative Botox younger and younger, with some clinics now marketing to people in their early twenties, is creating a generation that’s optimising their faces for photographs rather than for human connection.
  • Between 2000 and 2016 the number of Botox treatments in the US rose by 797 percent and demand has surged even further since the pandemic.
Ashley’s argument isn’t that nobody should ever get Botox. It’s that we should be having an honest conversation about what we’re actually trading away when we choose a frozen face over a lived in one.
