Michael and Super Mario Galaxy Are Having a Historic 2026
The Michael Jackson biopic is proving to be one of the most remarkable box office stories in years.
- It reclaimed No.1 in its fourth weekend with $26.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $282.8 million and its global tally to a staggering $703.9 million.
- It’s already the highest grossing music biopic in North American history, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody’s $216 million domestic run, and Japan hasn’t even opened yet.
- Meanwhile Super Mario Galaxy Movie is sitting at $964 million worldwide and is the odds on favourite to become the first film of 2026 to crack a billion dollars.
- Mortal Kombat II on the other hand had a brutal second weekend, dropping 65% to just $13.4 million, which puts its domestic total at $62 million and raises real questions about whether it can even hit $100 million at home.
Overall ticket sales are running 16% ahead of this point last year, and the mood across Hollywood right now is genuinely optimistic.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Is the Biggest Question Mark of the Summer
Everything this Memorial Day weekend is riding on Star Wars.
- The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first Star Wars film to hit theaters in over six years and projections are ranging anywhere from $81 million to $96 million for its opening weekend.
- That’s a wide range and it reflects the genuine uncertainty around the film. Divided first reactions, mixed critic scores, and comparisons to the troubled Solo:
- The Sheep Detectives and Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still very much out there, and if Grogu can tap into that same energy over the Memorial Day holiday weekend the numbers could surprise everyone.
- The rest of June is stacked with Masters of the Universe, Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure, and Toy Story 5 right behind it, so the summer of 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in years.
