Why Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Controversy Is Already Dividing Everyone

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has all the ingredients of a masterpiece but the Critical Drinker isn’t convinced, and after watching the latest trailer it’s easy to see why people are getting a bad feeling about this one.

Watch the full breakdown in the video below:

The Trailer Raised More Questions Than It Answered

On paper this should be a slam dunk. A $250 million budget, Christopher Nolan directing his most ambitious project ever, shot entirely on IMAX cameras across Greece, Morocco, and Italy, and a cast that includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.

  • Trailer that dropped on May 5, 2026, didn’t exactly inspire confidence. The dialogue felt modern and out of place for an ancient Greek epic. The costumes and armor drew immediate criticism for being historically inaccurate. The boats looked more Viking than ancient Greek.
  • The overall tone felt closer to a glossy TV drama than the sweeping mythological epic fans were hoping for. Nolan’s track record earns him a lot of goodwill but goodwill only goes so far when the footage looks this misaligned with the source material.

The Casting Controversies Are Overshadowing Everything Else

The Critical Drinker’s concern isn’t just about the visuals. It’s about the creative decisions that feel more like agenda ticking than storytelling.

  • Travis Scott has been cast as a bard, with Nolan explaining the choice by drawing a parallel between rap and Homer’s oral poetry tradition.
  • Lupita Nyong’o is playing Helen of Troy, a decision that has sparked fierce debate online and even drew criticism from Greece itself, with one editor describing it as a falsification of a global literary treasure.
  • Whether you agree with those choices or not, the controversy is now the loudest conversation around the film. And when the discourse around your movie drowns out excitement about the actual story, that’s a problem.
